Welcome
to Scrimp and Scrape, the diary of 'novice' the kitchen gardener. I have a container garden, out of necessity not choice, but have actually found container gardening to be really easy to manage for a novice gardener.
My diary has useful tips and insights for the novice gardener. If you are just starting out, start small and remember that gardening, like any skill, can be learnt with lots of practise.
I bought my first plants for the garden in February 2010, they were actually a set of 4 dwarf fruit trees. I bought them from a (not really thought through) desire to save money on buying fruit and veg at the supermarket. In that first summer, along with my fruit trees, I also grew courgettes in a grow bag, and spring onions crammed in a little pot.
The trees came as bare roots, which meant they were (and are) young trees, so they didn't bear much fruit that year. The courgettes and spring onion on the other hand were rampant and I had enough to give away to family.
That was it... I was bit by the gardening bug. It has been loads of fun learning how to grow things in pots and containers.
You will also find some recipes in my diary giving you some ideas about what to do with all that lovely produce you have grown at home.
You might also find the odd entry under 'scrimps' which is anything not food or garden and usually related to household issues.
I have learnt a lot. I still have a lot to learn. I am enjoying learning it all.
